About This Job

KM Malta Airlines Limited, the national airline of the Maltese Islands, is seeking to recruit an Enterprise Architect within the Information Technology department.

Purpose of Position

The role operates the Airline's Enterprise Architecture function, supporting the alignment of Information Technology (IT) to the business strategy across a large multi-vendor application estate and the wider ecosystem that underpins the operation. The Enterprise Architecture framework spans the business, application, data and integration, and technology architecture domains. It incorporates security architecture requirements, principles, and constraints. The role provides architectural leadership to the Airline's ongoing technology transformation programme, governs Buy/Build/Integrate decisions, and applies recognised standards and best practices to ensure scalability, long-term cost effectiveness, and disciplined management of the IT total cost of ownership and operational efficiency at the Airline's scale. The role provides architectural oversight of all strategic vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Define, publish, and maintain the Airline's reference architecture, architectural standards, and design principles, applied consistently across on-premises and hybrid multi-cloud environments and covering integration patterns, application portfolio, identity, resilience, software delivery and CI/CD practices, and technology lifecycle.
  • Maintain current-state and target-state architectures across all five architectural domains, together with the transition plans between them, ensuring that the IT landscape is holistically managed and properly scoped end-to-end.
  • Establish and chair the Architecture Review Board, acting as the design authority for all material technology change under the Head of IT's accountability. Ensure that architectural decisions are documented, traceable, and consistently applied across internal teams and contracted suppliers, including the assessment of architectural risks and impact analyses for proposed material changes and the provision of architectural guidance across the project and programme delivery lifecycle.
  • Govern Buy/Build/Integrate decisions, applying the Airline's "Buy before Build" principle and providing architectural input to all material vendor selection and procurement processes.
  • Hold strategic vendors to the Airline's approved enterprise architectural standards, and ensure that vendor-led proposals incorporate the security standards, security architecture requirements, and compliance obligations as defined by Information Security, where proposals carry material security, privacy, regulatory, resilience, or safety implications.
  • Maintain end-to-end understanding of the technology landscape across operational, airworthiness, commercial, integration, infrastructure, and corporate IT systems.
  • Ensure that the application portfolio and integration patterns remain aligned with evolving business objectives through regular review with business and technology stakeholders, providing the strategic alignment needed to establish competitive advantage, cost-effectiveness, and agility in service provision.
  • Define and maintain the Airline's cloud architecture strategy, ensuring that workload placement, integration, and operational management are coherent across on-premises, private cloud, and public cloud environments in a hybrid multi-cloud model.
  • Ensure that architectural standards are closely integrated with the practices and tools used to manage business and technology services, including IT Service Management (ITSM) processes aligned to ITIL, configuration management, asset management, and change management.
  • Ensure that security architecture requirements, principles, and approved security standards are embedded within the wider Enterprise Architecture and applied throughout technology design, procurement, change, and delivery activities.
  • Contribute to a coherent vendor and application portfolio roadmap that supports disciplined management of IT Total Cost of Ownership and operational efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain the business architecture domain, mapping business capabilities to applications and integrations to identify duplication, gaps, and opportunities for capability uplift, and supporting business teams in defining the technology requirements that underpin business KPIs.

Experience, Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in enterprise architecture, solution architecture, and integration architecture roles, including a track record of architectural ownership of complex multi-vendor application landscapes spanning on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Previous experience in operating within complex enterprise environments, including IT outsourcing arrangements and vendor-led delivery models.
  • Experience in aviation, travel, transportation, or another regulated industry (banking, insurance, gaming), will be considered an asset.
  • Practical experience producing and maintaining architectural artefacts across the business, application, data and integration, technology, and security architecture domains (current-state, target-state, transition architectures, and reference architectures).
  • Hands-on experience leading Architecture Review Boards or equivalent design-authority forums and integrating architectural governance with IT Service Management and operational management practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline (essential).
  • Professional certification in TOGAF, ArchiMate, or an equivalent enterprise architecture framework will be considered an asset.
  • Technical familiarity with integration patterns and middleware (REST APIs, event-driven architectures, message brokers, iPaaS platforms), identity and access management, hybrid multi-cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure, AWS, GCP), cloud management, containerisation, and modern application architectures.
  • Strong understanding of: Enterprise Architecture frameworks (TOGAF, ArchiMate), application portfolio management, integration and API strategy, technology lifecycle management, cloud architecture, architecture governance, and the alignment of IT to business strategy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and balance near-term opportunities with longer-term strategic priorities, and to assess options on architectural, operational, and IT Total Cost of Ownership grounds.
  • Knowledge of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery procedures, together with familiarity with key ITIL processes such as Asset and Configuration Management, Change and Incident Management related to service availability, resilience, and architectural integrity across on-premises and multi-cloud environments.
