About This Job

Summary: As a Wine Connoisseur or Wine Specialist, you will be responsible for curating and managing a diverse selection of wines, providing expert guidance and recommendations to customers, and enhancing the overall dining or retail experience. Your passion for wine and deep knowledge of different varietals, regions, and vintages will contribute to creating memorable experiences for wine enthusiasts and novices alike.

Responsibilities:

  1. Wine Selection: Curate and manage an extensive wine list or inventory, selecting wines that complement the cuisine or preferences of your target audience.
  2. Customer Service: Provide personalized recommendations and guidance to customers, helping them select wines that suit their taste preferences, budget, and occasion.
  3. Tastings and Events: Organize and host wine tastings, educational seminars, and special events to showcase featured wines, promote new releases, and engage with customers.
  4. Wine Education: Share your expertise and passion for wine with customers and colleagues, offering insights into different grape varieties, winemaking techniques, and wine regions.
  5. Food and Wine Pairing: Advise customers on the best wine pairings for various dishes, helping to enhance their dining experience and showcase the versatility of different wines.
  6. Sales and Revenue Generation: Drive sales and revenue through effective promotion and upselling of wines, achieving or exceeding sales targets and goals.
  7. Inventory Management: Monitor inventory levels, track wine sales, and coordinate with suppliers to ensure a diverse and well-maintained selection of wines.
  8. Wine Program Development: Collaborate with management to develop and implement wine programs and promotions, keeping abreast of industry trends and customer preferences.
  9. Staff Training: Provide training and education to restaurant or retail staff members on wine service, including proper storage, pouring, and presentation techniques.
  10. Wine Cellar Management: Oversee the organization and maintenance of wine cellars or storage areas, ensuring proper temperature, humidity, and handling of wine bottles.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge of wine varietals, regions, and vintages, supported by formal wine education or certification (e.g., WSET, CMS).
  • Previous experience working as a sommelier, wine steward, or in a similar role within the hospitality or retail industry.
  • Strong customer service skills, with the ability to build rapport, communicate effectively, and provide exceptional service to diverse clientele.
  • Sales-oriented mindset, with a track record of driving wine sales and achieving revenue targets.
  • Excellent tasting and sensory evaluation skills, with the ability to accurately assess wine quality and characteristics.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills, particularly in managing wine inventory and cellar operations.
  • Professional demeanor, with a passion for sharing your love of wine and creating memorable experiences for customers.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required in the hospitality industry.
